A lower freight rate does not guarantee a lower landed cost

Compare the complete shipment cost, including destination tariffs, free time, inland movement and delay exposure. A market-wide percentage cannot price your lane.

A lower ocean quotation can be offset by destination handling, storage, equipment detention, customs-related costs or inland transport. That is a costing principle, not proof that freight is falling on every lane or that every Indian port has increased charges by the same percentage.

Compare quotations with matching origin, destination, equipment, service, shipment date and validity. Ask what is included and excluded, which currency applies, and whether any surcharge or destination tariff can change before arrival.

Record demurrage and detention separately, along with their contractual free time and tariff. Obtain the terminal or CFS charges applicable to the actual shipment. Prepare the document set, duty funds and onward movement early. Review the final invoice against the agreed quote and the events that started each charging clock. A forecast is not a booking commitment or a substitute for the current tariff.

Questions we are getting

Do lower ocean rates always reduce landed cost?

No. Destination charges, inland transport, duties and time-related charges may offset a line-haul saving.

Which terms should I compare alongside the rate?

Inclusions, exclusions, validity, currency, destination charges, demurrage, detention, free time and onward transport.
